Creative Visions Serves Its’ 100,000th Sunday Meal

DiningDes Moines — After 11 years of serving free Sunday dinners to Des Moines area residents, Creative Visions Sunday Feed Program will serve its’ 100,000th  meal on Sunday, August 11, 2013.

According to Ako Abdul-Samad, Creative Visions CEO, the Sunday Feed Program was established in 2001, “to ensure that economically challenged families receive a nutritious meal, and has served over 200 meals per Sunday since its’ start.  The hope for the program is to raise awareness in the community about hunger, and provide a vehicle for others to get involved to help.”

The mission for Creative Visions is to develop economically vulnerable individuals, families, and communities into becoming self-empowered, self-responsible, and self-sufficient through education and economic empowerment. “If the people are hungry, it is hard to teach them the things necessary to break the cycle of economic dependency,” Abdul-Samad says.  “As the economy has worsened, we have seen an increasing need for additional supplies.”

“There’s a lot of need out there, and a lot of different needs,” said Creative Visions volunteer, Pat “Tweet” Sanders when she rolled in with the rest of the crew at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Sanders, saw this as an opportunity to bring her energy and spirit to those in need.

“Tweet” is just one of over 1,000 volunteers who have participated with the Sunday Feed program since its’ inception in 2001. Immediately after the group meeting, things really get moving; the crazed beehive of activity swarming around the kitchen is amazing to watch. The comparative calm is interrupted as the delivery van comes back empty after serving a hot dinner to more than 130 shut-ins at three locations. The already tiring crew then serves dinner-rain or shine to nearly 150 people each week until 7:00 p.m.  Creative Visions repeats that process every Sunday.

In commemoration of the 100,000th meal served, attendees will receive a token of appreciation and an opportunity to win a gift card from one of the program sponsors.

“There are lots of people in the community who do not have access to hot meals on Sundays. We have been and plan on providing them with a meal as long as resources are available,” says Abdul-Samad.

Creative Visions is located at 1343-13th Street, Des Moines, Iowa  50314, and is recognized as a 501c3 non-profit organization by the Internal Revenue Service.  Meals are delivered Sundays between the hours of 4:00-5:00 p.m., and served between the hours of 5:00-7:00 p.m. Volunteers, contributions, and donations are welcomed.  For more information, contact (515) 244-4003
