Creative Visions Programs Help Fill Void Caused by Closure of Unemployment Centers

The recent Governor’s  veto of language the prohibited the closure of 37 Iowa Workforce Development unemployment field offices, makes Creative Visions Job Readiness and Computer Class programs even more relevant and needed in the community. What the closings will mean is that individuals will no longer have staff assistance in processing unemployment claims or looking for jobs, but will have to learn to navigate the virtual access point services on their own. This could be a major obstacle to individual with limited literacy and English proficiency skills as well as those who lack  basic computer skills.

Fortunately, Creative Visions, which has long been a Career Access Point, (now known as Virtual Access), will continue to provide trained staff to work with clients on the virtual access services system and will continue to offer Computer Classes to help community members learn basic computer skills.  “We have to be proactive in helping clients get the help they need.”  said Ako Abdul-Samad Creative Visions, CEO

Creative Visions has recently added new components to its Job Readiness program which was develped to address urban unemployment. Recent features include the addition of the Virtual Access software to all computers in its computer lab and the development of a Job Club. The Job Club   meets twice a month and is designed to provide job seekers support and an opportunity to learn best practices in searching for employment. Participants have the chance to  network with prospective employers and share their experiences with each other. For more information about the Job Club contact Kevin Clark at Kevin.Clark@creativevisionsia.org  or call 515.244.4003. Ext. 121.

The computer class was formed in response to recent reports which show an increase in lack of digital skills among urban low income communities. The computer class meets each Monday from 4:30 – 5:30.  Registration is required  and can be made by calling 244-4003. Both programs are free and open to the community.

These programs are just part of several programs we offer to build strong families and communties

Creative Visions Marks 15th Anniversary with a Community- Wide Celebration

Creative Visions Human Development Institute was joined by over 150 community members in celebrating its 15th anniversary Sunday July 24, 2011 at the Evelyn Davis Park.  The three hour event attracted community members, other community organizations and elected officials.

Guests were treated to games, and music provided by DJ Hollywood and enjoyed hot dogs, chips, popsicles, cake and other treats prepared and served by Creative Visions volunteers and staff.

The highlight of the event was the dunking tank. Guests young and old took turns for nearly two hours at a chance to dunk Creative Visions founder and CEO Ako Abdul- Samad.  Ms. Marlene Dolby, the Executive Director of Evelyn Davis Learning Center dunked Ako on her first effort.  Lt. Gonzales and other members of the Des Moines Police Department were not as lucky. Ako received a surprise when the guest broke into a happy birthday song to recognize his 60th birthday which was also celebrated during the event.

Creative Visions would like to thank the community for joining them in the celebration and especially members of the Community Ambassadors and the Des Moines Police Department who helped patrol the park during the event. Creative Visions also thanks the numerous volunteers who helped make the event a success.
